“Friendship is the hardest thing in
the world to explain. It’s not
something you learn in school. But if
you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned
anything.”

SUPRA KEY FEE GOING
ANNUAL: The Association will no longer
be billing $7.50 quarterly for keycard services. Instead the fee will be billed annually at $30 (no increase). This fee will be added to the annual dues
bill coming up in August. The two main
reasons for the change are to reduce the inconvenience to members of both
paying the small amount so frequently and the risk of losing keycard service
should a member forget to pay. Please
note this fee will be on your annual Association dues that will be sent out at
the end of August 2003 and due by September 30th, 2003. Association Management.

Veteran agent
kills relocation coordinator over “lousy referral” – A veteran Century 21
agent, apparently angered by a “lousy referral,” shot and killed the office
relocation coordinator and another person who was in her office, and wounded
another person, and then killed himself two hours later when he was stopped by
police. The San Antonio Express-News
reports neither police nor co-workers are certain what exactly set off agent
Ron Thomas, who was described as both a consistent producer and occasional
mentor to new sales associates at Century 21 United-Action. The newspaper suggested, however, that
Thomas and relocation coordinator Anna Medcalf had a smoldering dislike of each
other that dated back to an apparently unintended racial remark made by Medcalf
while she was being trained by Thomas, an African-American. Also killed in the shooting was fellow
relocation worker Nancy Scharein. Colleague Jane Swanson was wounded. The two
apparently were using Medcalf’s fax machine when Thomas came in and shot
Medcalf. Police said Thomas
cleaned off his desk and discarded his business cards just before heading for
Medcalf’s office. Two hours after the shootings, officers stopped Thomas north
of Austin. He shot himself as police closed in. Reprinted with permission of the Real
Estate Intelligence Report.
Bush senior to
address Home Builders convention – The National Association of Home Builders has
announced that former President George H.W. Bush will open the organization’s
2004 International Builders' Show in Las Vegas. Bush will address
the convention on Jan. 19, the same day the presidential selection process
officially begins with the Iowa Caucuses and a week before the New Hampshire
primary on Jan. 27. Bush was the first sitting president to address the NAHB –
in 1990. The 2004 convention is expected to draw some 90,000 attendees from 100
countries. Reprinted with permission of the Real
Estate Intelligence Report.
Median home
prices top $175,000 - Existing-home sales slipped 0.3% in June to a seasonally
adjusted annual rate of 5.83 million units from a level of 5.85 million units
in May. Last month's sales activity was 8.6%
above the 5.37-million unit pace in June 2002, and was tied for the
fourth-highest month on record. Chief
economist David Lereah said the reduced number of sales in June, “may reflect
some weakness in the labor markets.” However, he said historically low mortgage
interest rates are helping new households to afford homes and allow existing
owners to sell their homes and purchase another. “This is the primary reason we
expect a new sales record this year," he said. The national median existing-home price was $176,500 in June, up
7.7% from June 2002 when the median price was
$163,900. New home sales were up to a
seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.16 million, compared to 1.11 million in
May. Reprinted with permission of the Real
Estate Intelligence Report.
Agents who
assist seniors to meet in Vegas – The Seniors Advantage Real Estate Council will
hold its semi-annual convention in Las Vegas from Aug. 13 to Aug. 16, this year
focusing on how to use the SRES designation to “build and increase business, work
more effectively with senior centers to develop clients, and build a seniors
division within a real estate company.” SAREC's mission is to assist
members in meeting the special real estate needs and concerns of maturing
Americans, who today own a significant portion of the nation’s residential real
estate. This year's event is titled "A Senior
Moment." Several hundred brokers and agents are expected to attend the
meeting. See www.seniorsrealestate.com/convention.htm for more information. Reprinted with permission of the Real
Estate Intelligence Report.
