4. NEW ARTICLE: DON’T DO THIS AT HOME! - Police have arrested two real estate agents and other local business people who they say were conduits for marijuana dealers who warehoused massive amounts of the drug in homes before being redistributed to other parts of the country. Authorities have arrested real estate agents Patricia Mendoza and Christopher Sisneros, alleging they manufactured straw buyers to purchase houses where the marijuana was stored before being shipped to other cities nationwide. Police also have seized 31 properties in Tucson and Phoenix collectively valued in excess of $6 million. Vehicles, drugs and cash also have been seized in raids. Ringleaders of the drug transfer operation reportedly are from Mexico and Jamaica. RE Intel 8-23-04 BACK TO INDEX

6. NEW ARTICLE: YOU CAN’T BE TOO CAREFUL OUT THERE - Albuquerque police have charged a 27-year-old man in the slaying last week of real estate agent Garland Taylor, 74. Mario Lucas Chavez was being held on $2 million bond. Taylor’s body was found earlier in the week in a home he had listed in an upscale part of the city. Police said Taylor had been shot. Police believe Taylor’s killer had attempted to lure several real estate agents to vacant homes in the past several days. There were some indications the assailant had posed as a corporate attorney. Authorities said several tips had led them to Chavez, who was arrested late in the week at the home of a relative. RE Intel 8-23-04 BACK TO INDEX
7. NEW ARTICLE: YOU BREAK IT, YOU BUY IT: AGENT SLAMS CAR INTO LISTING - A listing agent attempting to leave a property she had just shown some buyers hit the accelerator instead of the brake, sending her car careening through the front door of the house and into the living room. The freak accident left agent Diane Lukasik and the two buyers shaken but uninjured. There was no one in the home. The house is considered uninhabitable. Home owner Dennis Robison says he will ask Lukasik’s company, L.W. Reedy Real Estate, to buy the home – listed at $169,900. The company indicated it would wait until an insurance estimate is received to make a decision. The accident occurred when Lukasik and the buyers were leaving the home with the intent of writing up an offer. As she backed up, she bumped another vehicle. As she pulled back forward, she accidentally hit the accelerator, sending the car lurching forward. RE Intel 8-23-04 BACK TO INDEX
8. NEW ARTICLE: TOWN FOR SALE FOR $3 MILLION -The privately owned City of Otis, which includes a restaurant, gas station, market and two homes, has been put up for sale with an asking price of $3 million. The community is owned by Vivian Lematta, 83, who also attempted to sell it several years ago. Lematta is selling the community and another 190 acres along the Salmon River. It is located about three miles from the Oregon coast. Lematta, who lives in Maryland, says she wants to sell the town because “it’s not as much fun as it used to be.” She cited state and federal government demands as another key reason for the sale.
